In a season marred by a series of close losses, the Georgetown women’s tennis team has continued to battle throughout the spring. This perseverance was rewarded last weekend, when the squad earned a decisive 4-0 win over the Rhode Island Rams on Friday at Yates Field House.

Georgetown (2-10, 0-1 Big East) dominated both the singles and doubles combination in its most complete performance of the season. The top of the singles lineup led the charge, as junior Risa Nakagawa and senior Sara Swift won in straight sets in the No. 1 and 2 slots, respectively. Senior Casey Marx enjoyed similar success in the No. 4 position, prevailing 6-0, 6-2.

The Hoyas also benefited from a pair of forfeits. The Rams were unable to field a player in the No. 6 singles slot and in the No. 3 doubles position. The latter absence, coupled with junior Cecilia Lynham and senior Drew Spinosa’ s 6-2 triumph in the second doubles slot, granted the Hoyas the doubles point.

The Hoyas’ quick victory also rendered two singles matches irrelevant, as both senior Daphne de Chatellus’ and freshman Sophie Henderson’s matches were unfinished. Henderson held a 1-0 early advantage when her match was ended prematurely.

On Saturday, the Hoyas travelled to Annapolis to battle the Navy Midshipmen. Georgetown struggled in both singles and doubles play, falling 5-2. The top and bottom of the singles lineup provided the Blue and Gray with its only two points, as Nakagawa orchestrated a three-set comeback, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0. Marx also dismissed her opponent in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.

In the No. 4 and No. 5 slots, Navy used a pair of three-set comebacks of its own to take two crucial points. De Chatellus lost 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4, and junior Sydney Goodson fell 5-7, 6-3, 5-7.

The Georgetown men’s squad (4-5, 1-0 Big East) also competed this weekend, as the team split its two matches. On Friday against Marquette at Yates Field House, Georgetown dropped a 4-0 decision to the Golden Eagles. Marquette earned three of its points in singles play and the fourth in doubles. The remaining three matches were called early, after Marquette clinched the win with its fourth point.

Freshman Rohan Kamdar was set to play a third set when his match was ended, while both senior Marco Lam and junior Michael Chen trailed 4-6 when play was suspended. The combination of Kamdar and Chen provided the Hoyas with their lone victory of the match in a 6-4 triumph in the No. 3 slot. Marquette prevailed in the first two doubles matches to take the point.

On Saturday, the men’s team accompanied the women to Annapolis, where the Hoyas faced Boston University. Against the Terriers, Georgetown relied on the bottom of its singles lineup and a convincing doubles performance in a 4-2 victory. Nos. 3 to 5 allturned in straight set wins, as freshman Connor Lee earned a 7-6, 7-5 victory, Chen prevailed 6-4, 6-2 and Lam triumphed 6-2, 7-5. Freshman Charlie Sharton was well on his way to a win when his No. 6 match was suspended, as the freshman was leading 6-4, 3-0.

Complementing the Hoyas’ singles performance, Georgetown swept BU in doubles play. The combination of seniors Mac Rechan and team captain Peter Beatty earned a 6-1 win, while sophomore Ian Witmer and Chen produced a 7-5 Blue and Gray victory to secure the Hoyas’ fourth poin t.

Both squads will be back in action this week, when the women travel to the University of Richmond to battle the Spiders on Wednesday, and the men look to start a winning streak against Navy on Saturday back in Annapolis.
