SWIMMING AND DIVING | GU Readies for Catholic Meet

At 1 p.m. this Saturday, the Georgetown swimming and diving team will face off in a dual meet against Catholic in their second home event of the year.

The Hoyas’ last competition in McCarthy Pool, which took place on Sept. 30, yielded disappointing results as both the men’s and women’s teams lost to Towson. Despite strong individual performances from sophomore Lauren Opatrny, junior Paul Quincy and freshman Michael Ng, all of whom won multiple races, the Tigers bested the men, 156-135, and the women, 171-128. This Saturday gives the Blue and Gray an opportunity to redeem that loss on the Hilltop against a local rival .

Most recently, the Hoyas competed against Bucknell, Colgate, Delaware, Fordham and La Salle in the three-day Bucknell Invitational. Both the men’s and women’s teams finished in fifth place overall, driven by strong performances from Opatrny, Quincy and sophomore Christian Kilgore, all of whom made the finals in each of the three individual events. Quincy’s dominance continued with first-place finishes in the 500 freestyle and 1650 freestyle, and a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle. Opatrny enjoyed similar success, finishing first in the 200 individual medley, second in the 100-yard butterfly, and third in the 100 backstroke. Other notable performances included Ng’s second place finish in the 100 backstroke and freshman Jillian Carter’s second place finish in the 200 butterfly.

These kinds of performances would undoubtedly help the Blue and Gray come away with the win this weekend, but the team will rely on the strength of the entire squad to reach their larger goals at the conference championship this spring. While Catholic’s swimming and diving team is not a conference opponent, the squad will still offer some quality competition for the Hoyas.

The Cardinals have enjoyed a winning season so far, with both the men’s team and the women’s team winning three meets while losing only two all year. Earlier in the year, Catholic competed in two unscored tri-meets against Division I area rivals GWU and American, where they registered solid performances in the men’s 1650 free, women’s 1650 free, and women’s 400 IM. While the Hoyas have so far recorded faster times in all of these events, the Blue and Gray cannot afford to underestimate the competition.

A win this weekend would help the Hoyas gather momentum as they anticipate the conference championship in February. With only three meets left — at James Madison, George Washington and Maryland — before the big event, the Hoyas are looking to tally up some victories so they can head to the Big East championship with confidence.
