Student Reports Darnall Intrusion

A Georgetown student was threatened by two middle-aged men she discovered in her Darnall Hall room Thursday night, after she pursued the pair out of her room and down a nearby stairwell.

Kara Gula (MSB ’09) said she had left the door to her room open while baking cookies in the residence hall lounge and returned only five minutes later to find the two men in her room.

“I came back to my room and saw these two guys just standing there looking at my bed,” Gula said. “I asked them what they were doing and they said nothing and started running down the stairs.”

Another third-floor resident, Anne Mary Ciminelli (COL ’09), said that she heard voices from inside of Gula’s room.

“I heard her say, `What are you guys doing in my room?'” Ciminelli said. “At first I thought she was just joking with some friends.”

Gula said when the men did not respond, she “got in front of them and asked them what they had in their pockets.”

“They said nothing and then told me that if I didn’t let them leave they’d hurt me,” Gula said, adding that she then ran back to her room and called the Department of Public Safety.

According to a campus-wide e-mail security alert sent Friday, DPS responded to the scene and notified the Metropolitan Police Department, which is still conducting an investigation.

Director of the Department of Public Safety Darryl Harrison said that MPD had been contacted and was investigating, but would not comment further.

Students said the men exited through a back stairwell that is occasionally propped open for easy access to the dorm, particularly for those who use the entrance for smoking breaks. They speculated that the men may have entered through this door as well, although there is also a front door to the dormitory that does not lock.

Darnall Hall Director Patrick Erdman said that while this security breach does fall under his jurisdiction, he was not allowed to comment.
