Sophomore forward Hollis Thompson has declared for the NBA Draft but has not hired an agent, Georgetown Sports Information confirmed to The Hoya today.

By not hiring an agent, Thompson retains eligibility to return to the Hoyas for the 2011-2012 season, but he must withdraw his name from the draft by May 8 in order to come back to school. The 2011 NBA Draft will be held June 23.

Fourth on the team in points this season with 8.6 per game, Thompson averaged 4.4 rebounds per game and 51.9 percent shooting from the field, including a 45 percent clip from three-point range in his 23 minutes per game.

Thompson had his career game in the Hoyas’ first-round loss to VCU in the NCAA tournament, scoring 26 points on 8-of-10 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds.

Thompson’s declaration follows sophomore guard Vee Sanford’s announcement to transfer. Thompson, a 6-foot-7 swingman, spent the majority of his playing time at forward this season.

Thompson began the season in the starting five before being substituted for freshman forward Nate Lubick midway through the year. Coming off the bench, Thompson served as a major spark for the Hoyas during their eight-game winning streak. Following the late-season injury to senior guard Chris Wright, Thompson re-entered the starting five in March.

Graduating a semester early from high school, the California native arrived at Georgetown for the spring 2009 semester to practice with the team. Thompson was rated as the No. 63 overall recruit in the Class of 2009 by Rivals.com.

The rising junior was projected to start next year and would have been counted on to be a leading offensive force for the Hoyas, who lose their two leading scorers in Chris Wright and Austin Freeman to graduation. A talented shooter, Thompson and rising-senior guard Jason Clark are the most experienced players on the team. Thompson also proved to be an apt rebounder, especially on the offensive end.

Thompson has not appeared in any mock NBA Draft scenarios. Should Thompson leave, Georgetown’s starting five could project as Markel Starks, Jason Clark, Nate Lubick and any combination of the sophomore and freshman classes — potentially new recruit Otto Porter, Tyler Adams or rising-sophomore forward Moses Ayegba.
