TENNIS | Men Win Four Flights at Navy, Women Struggle at ITAs

The Georgetown men’s tennis team competed at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md., last weekend, while the women’s team headed to Lynchburg, Va., for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Regional Tournament.

Sophomores Connor Lee and Rohan Kamdar led the Georgetown men’s tennis team to a strong showing. The sophomores teamed up in the doubles round robin, defeating opponents from the University of Hartford by a score of 6-3, Navy by a score of 6-4, Delaware by a score of 6-4 and George Washington by a score of 7-5.w

Senior Michael Chen and freshman Andrew Rozanov had an equally impressive weekend and earned three victories. The pair defeated their doubles opponents from Navy, Delaware and George Mason. Chen and Rozanov defeated Navy again in the finals, completing an undefeated weekend.

On the singles side, freshman Carlos Grande earned three straight-set victories to earn a spot in the finals, where he defeated George Washington junior Dennis Afanasev in three sets, capped by a dominant 10-2 tiebreaker.

Men’s and women’s tennis Head Coach Courtney Dolehide said that she has confidence in every member of her team.

“[There are] so many guys that I would feel so comfortable with them out there in a dual match setting,” Dolehide said in an interview with The Hoya.

Sophomore Luke Ross defeated opponents from the University of to advance to the finals and place second in the third division, while sophomore Mark Militzer, sophomore Charlie Sharton and junior Ian Witmer all advanced to the finals of their divisions as well.

The Blue and Gray’s second consecutive strong weekend serves as a tune-up for the men’s ITA Regionals, which begins Thursday, Oct. 18, in Blacksburg, Va.

Dolehide emphasized the importance of getting multiple players involved in the Navy Invitational.

“[The benefit was] all around getting as many matches, as many competition opportunities as possible,” Dolehide said.

The Georgetown women’s team faced off with some of the region’s strongest opponents across all conferences in the ITA Regionals last weekend. The Hoyas rallied to defeat two opponents from Towson University, but fell in the majority of their matches.
