Anthropology Program Seeks Autonomy

Anthropology professors are looking to separate the program from its sociology counterpart after seeing the major's increasing popularity in recent years.

Forty-four students are currently majoring in the social science since the program was established only four years ago. In response to its growth, many anthropology professors have also initiated a push to become an independent department.

Former Heads of State Discuss Latin American Economy

Three former heads of state and the current U.S. Secretary of Commerce were among a panel of speakers that discussed the private sector in Latin America Tuesday in Gaston Hall. The panel discussed current economic issues and made recommendations on how to improve the economic situation in Latin America.

Shot of Charity Raises Almost $2,400

Through 25-cent donations from customers, The Shot of Charity program raised nearly $2,400 total for two charities over its first four months.

Richardson Calls for End to War

In Georgetown’s first glimpse of the 2008 presidential election, candidate and Gov. Bill Richardson (D-N.M.) emphasized his call for immediate U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq.

The first speaker in Georgetown’s 2008 Presidential Candidate Lecture Series, Richardson outlined his evacuation plan for U.S. troops in Iraq, a means to end what he described as a “cycle of violence.”

“Ninety-three percent of Sunnis and over half the Shia think it’s OK to shoot at an American soldier,” Richardson said, describing what he saw as the extent to which the Iraqis want the American troops out of their country.

GU Graduate Students Open Local Free Health Clinic

A group of Georgetown graduate and medical students opened Washington, D.C.’s first student-organized free health clinic, located in Southwest D.C., today.

Under the guidance of Matthew Levy, director of community pediatrics at Georgetown University Hospital, the H.O.Y.A. Clinic at D.C. Village will operate every Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for the residents of D.C. Village Emergency Shelter for Homeless Families.

“The H.O.Y.A. Clinic is dedicated to serving the families at D.C. Village,” said Patricia Notario (MED ’10), one of the coordinators of the clinic.

Notario said the clinic will eventually be open more than one day per week.
