Hoyas Undone by Duke Defense

You can’t say the Hoyas didn’t go down swinging.

After an afternoon of inconsistent offense, Georgetown missed five shots, including two free position tries and four attempts that were stopped by the Duke goalie, in the final 1:45 of their NCAA first-round game against Duke and came out on the short end of 10-8 final score at the Multi-Sport Facility.

The Skinny: Georgetown looks to avenge a heart-breaking 12-11 home loss when they travel to Durham for a pre-St. Patrick’s Day matinee against the Blue Devils. Duke extended its winning streak to three over Georgetown last year as the Devils overcame a three-goal halftime deficit to nip the Hoyas in the final minutes.

Underdog Hoyas Hope to Prove That Their Bite is Bigger Than Their Bark

When the Inside Lacrosse poll came out before the 2008 season, the Hoyas found themselves ranked 14th in the nation, but something didn’t seem right despite the lofty ranking.

“We’re the underdogs this year,” says Patty Piotrowicz, a senior midfielder and one of the three team captains.

“No one’s expecting anything out of us,” adds sophomore midfielder Ashby Kaestner.

Hoyas Fall to Orange in Big East Final

Dull gray skies and chilly rain greeted the Hoyas upon their return to the Hilltop Sunday night, reflecting the mood after a 12-6 defeat in the finals of the Big East championship at the hands of Syracuse.

It was an unfitting end to an exciting tournament. Friday saw the Hoyas overcome host Notre Dame in the semifinals, emerging out of the triple-overtime fray with a 15-14 victory.

The air will be thick with tension and excitement in Indiana when the Hoyas step onto the field today to face No. 2 seed Notre Dame for the second time in two weeks.

Hoyas Turn Season Around With Blowout

The Hoyas may still rescue a plummeting end to their season, as the team came off back-to-back losses to beat Big East rival Connecticut on the road Sunday, 16-7.

Streaky Terps Double Up Hoyas

The Hoyas’ stellar season is sliding downhill at an alarming rate. The Blue and Gray, who started the spring with a five-match winning streak in the young season, suffered their third loss within the last four games Wednesday, falling to beltway rivals, No. 3 Maryland, 14-7.

GU Loses Home Bout With Fighting Irish

The Hoyas’ flawless home record was stained this Saturday after a rough defeat at the hands of Big East rival Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish (10-4, 3-1 Big East) led from wire-to-wire as the Hoyas (9-4, 2-2) were unable to get into attacking rhythm until late in the game.

Georgetown Blooms in Final Minute

The seconds on the clock wound down rapidly above the “Hoyas 7, Guest 7” glowing in red on the scoreboard. The Hoyas on the field calmly passed the ball to each other while the Hoyas in the stands waited with baited breath. The clock blinked 32 … 31 … 30 … and then, as if out of nowhere, junior midfielder Megan Bloomer put on a burst of speed, sprinting towards the goal.

Orange Leave Hoyas Seeing Red

Heading to Syracuse on Saturday, Georgetown was a perfect 2-0 in Big East play and had aspirations of knocking off the team coaches tabbed as the preseason favorite to win the league. When they left following an 18-3 thrashing, it became clear that this may be the first year since the Big East’s inception in 2001 that the Hoyas do not win the league title.
