Fellowships Provide Equal Opportunities

In her column (“Students Must Ensure the Future of Feminism at GU,” THE HOYA, April 18, 2004, A3), Emily Liner writes: “a few female students have told me that they have felt uncomfortable in the competition for fellowship nominations on campus, but I could never get them to talk to me because they were afraid that the Office of Fellowships would reprimand them.” Lest this unsupported innu

Observatory Is for Plants, Not Just Stars

After reading “A Relic Worth Bringing Back” (THE HOYA, April 22, 2008, A2), I felt I should write to you.

SAT Policy Defies Reason

Not only did the newly released Georgetown admissions report for the upcoming 2008-2009 school year point out a more than 15 percent increase in the undergrad applicant pool (“Undergrad Applicants Climbs 15 Percent,” THE HOYA, April 18, 2008, A1), but the report showed that standardized test averages are up as well.

Jesuit Identity Says Feith Must Stay at GU

Many remember the controversial hiring of Douglas Feith two years ago. As Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, Feith played an instrumental role in authorizing and “planning” the war in Iraq. Many believe that Professor Feith’s term is not being renewed due to pressure from certain members of the Georgetown faculty who are uncomfortable with his controversial role in the Iraq war.

Senior Class Gift Deserves Appreciation

The beautiful thing about being a student of a university as remarkable as Georgetown is that we are all encouraged to voice our opinions. However, these freedoms do not give anyone, especially those writing for a newspaper, the right to make unfair judgments.

GU Won't Blindly Submit to Catholic Doctrine

In an interview within the lead story “A Papal Voyage, a Campus Question” (THE HOYA, Apr. 18, 2008, A1), Patrick Reilly, the president and founder of the Cardinal Newman Society, unnecessarily injected his disdain for sizable segments not only of the Georgetown campus community but of the Catholic community in general.

Hoya Blue Calls Foul

In his latest column “Teams and Fans Must Remember Their Roots,” The Hoya, April 15, 2008, B1), Alex Fumelli mentions that in the past he has turned to members of Hoya Blue for last-minute quotes for his columns. We wish he would have done so more extensively before writing this one.

Small Acts of Opposition Show Pope's True Colors

Though professor Mark Lance refers to his chiding of Pope Benedict (“Pope Must Atone for the Sins of His Past,” The Hoya, April 11, 2008, A3) as a “challenge,” his column reveals both the latent hostility toward the Catholic Church so common among self-styled academics as well as their propensity to advance such personal bias at the expense of the truth.

The Summer Houses That Hoyas Could Build

With their proposal of a Summer Fellows Initiative, which would provide subsidized summer housing for students with unpaid internships, newly elected GUSA President Pat Dowd and Vice President James Kelly have shown a refreshing ability to empower students and improve Georgetown.

Blunderous GUTS Route Needs Readjusting

Applauding the change in the GUTS bus routes/stops is akin to calling Mussolini’s ability to create train schedules a triumph. While a select few (as heard through the grapevine to be a certain professor and minions) tout that promoting a campus without vehicles is a nirvana to be achieved, they failed to apply any form of logic or reasoning to the situation.
