Virginia No Match for GU Crew in Final Fall Regatta
Georgetown rowing cruised through the water this weekend in Charlottesville, Va., at the Rivanna Romp Regatta, where the Hoyas took control over the host, the University of Virginia.
“We had already beaten UVA twice this fall, at the Charles and Princeton Chase. So we went into the race with expectations to do well. Since it was a home race for UVA, I did expect that they would be very aggressive,” Georgetown men’s Head Coach Tony Johnson said.
The Georgetown men did not yield any races in their final event of the fall season. In the men’s varsity eight race, the Georgetown “A” boat cleared the water with a strong first-place finish at 12:18.22, followed by UVA’s “A” boat and Georgetown’s “B” boat. The men raced very well considering lineup changes since the last race, due to multiple injuries on the team.
“The team’s solid performance in Charlottesville will serve as a positive conclusion to the fall racing season, as well as an excellent point of departure for the coming months of winter training,” said senior captain and stroke of the “A” eight boat, Grant Morrow.
In the men’s heavyweight four race Georgetown dominated, taking first and second with its “A” and “B” boats respectively. The Hoyas’ “A” boat finished first with a time of 13:41.90, with the Cavaliers’ “A” in third at 14:00.21, leaving Georgetown with a solid one-two finish.
“I thought we were continuing to improve right into this race which is good,” Johnson said.
Overall, Hoya men’s rowing ended its season with a strong impression, finishing in first place with its “A” eight and outpacing the Cavs’ top four. With the offseason now upon them, the men will begin training for spring races, gearing up for another competitive season.
“We all know that the springtime races are, in large part, won and lost over the winter. It’s up to each individual to realize his own max potential,” senior captain Jack Carlson said.
