Hoyas End Season in N.C.
The Georgetown women’s golf team ended its season with a strong finish last week at the Ross Resorts Invitation in Southern Pines, N.C. Coming in fourth place with a score of 70 over par, 934, for 52 holes, it was the team’s best performance of the season.
The Hoyas were led by freshman Katie Skinner, who came in eighth place with a 13-over 229. Her eighth-place individual finish was the team’s first top 10 finish for the season and also included her first hole-in-one.
“I was pretty excited because it was my first hole-in-one,” Skinner said. “I was on the back nine of my second round that day and I was pretty exhausted. I hadn’t been hitting my irons that well, but Coach [Patricia Post] told me I was in the home stretch and to stick with it. Getting a hole-in-one is definitely all that it’s chalked up to be.”
Skinner also commented on her overall experience as being a rookie.
“This season was really unique,” she said. “Because so many of us were freshmen, it felt like we were all trying to find our way. The older girls helped us a lot, but we’re all really looking forward to the spring season now that we have some experience under our belts.”
Overall, the team finished seventh at the Princeton Invitational, 11th at the Lady Northern Intercollegiate, 13th at the Xavier Invitational and 13th again at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate. While this season did not reflect the true potential of the team, the players are optimistic about their future performances.
“We started out knowing it was going to be a growing season,” sophomore Joan Dulieu said. “We have a very young team [five freshmen, two sophomores and one senior], so we weren’t expecting to win every tournament. Overall, I think our team has the most talent it’s ever had. Every one of us went low in a tournament this season, but our timing was off and we weren’t all going low on the same day. Once we bonded and came together as a team, all our hard work started to show. I feel like our last tournament really reflected our potential.”
Another high point of the season was the Xavier Invitational held at the LPGA Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Hoyas shot 20-over par 308 in their final round, to put them in 13th place. The Xavier Invitational was also a hit with all of the Hoyas.
“The Xavier Invitational is a tournament we always look forward to,” Dulieu said. “The tournament is always really well run, and you can’t beat Florida weather. This tournament is a few days longer than most, so it’s nice to be able to get into a grove. It’s a great opportunity for the team to bond and get to know each other better.”
