Ramadan 'Comes Clean' After Denying Secret Society Membership

On the eve of the GUSA executive election, vice presidential candidate Adam Ramadan (SFS ’14) has confirmed his membership in a private society unaffiliated with the Second Society of Stewards after denying his membership in a secret society the previous night.

After the story broke that rival candidate Jack Appelbaum (COL ’14) is a member of the Stewards, numerous people alleged that Ramadan was also in a secret society. Although he and his running mate Nate Tisa (SFS ’14) had denied Ramadan’s involvement in such groups when asked to comment about Appelbaum, Ramadan said disclosure of his own membership was prompted by reflection and the reaction to the Stewards story.

“What I think it comes down to is that if anybody is a part of a group like this, it’s at their discretion if and when to expose that information,” Ramadan said. “When I thought about it more and saw the way it unraveled today, I wanted full disclosure.”

Tisa said Wednesday that he was unaware of Ramadan’s membership until the campaign season had started and that he did not discuss it extensively.

“We never really got into it,” Tisa said. “It’s never really been an important part of our campaign.”

Ramadan apologized for having questioned the motivation of Jake Sticka (COL ’13), who was also listed as a Steward, for supporting Appelbaum’s campaign.

“I do not believe Jack’s — or anyone else’s — involvement in a private organization affects his ability to lead GUSA,” Ramadan wrote in a statement. “I regret questioning Jake’s motives for supporting Jack’s campaign; both have proven themselves able leaders at Georgetown and, like all Georgetown students, are entitled to their own opinions, not least of all during this GUSA campaign season.”

Appelbaum declined to comment on Ramadan’s statement.

According to Tisa, neither he nor Ramadan realized the extent of the similarity between Ramadan and Appelbaum’s memberships.

“We had a discussion today — I didn’t really realize the scope of what was going on,” Tisa said. “Once parallels emerged, we talked about it and tried to come clean with it.”

Ramadan emphasized that his society membership has not influenced his GUSA platform or campaign.

“I apologize for the nature of the secrecy behind it, but the issues are ultimately what matters. I don’t want this to be a distraction from what our campaign has done so far,” Ramadan said.

THE INTERNET REMEMBERS EVERYTHING.

If I were Ramadan, I would be worried. White collar companies (and grad schools) do due diligence on those they hire and a simple Google search will show for eternity that Adam is an unethical hypocrite and liar. Does anyone following this sorry episode not think that he would throw one of his friends or family under the bus if it served his needs? I suspect his girlfriend or boyfriend is worried about whether or not he's been faithful. He/she has good reason to do so.

Adam lied publicly, to the student body and school staff, during the course of a student event of extreme importance. Shouldn't he be brought up for a violation under Georgetown's Honor Code?

As an alum, watching this back and forth squabbling over completely irrelevant things--membership in "secret" societies; the outcome of a college election; who said what to whom on facebook--is both hilarious and brings back fond memories. Please continue.

There are no 'men' in DPE, only a group of puerile boys who kneel at the altar in front of Terry Boyle.

Can we all get real here with a few simple facts. First and foremost, the stewards are a poor man's DPE. If you want evidence of the Illumaniti look no further than 34th & prospect. Second, Terry Boyle of DPE is leading the New World Order through psychological and political warfare tactics right under your ignorant noses. Anyone that has looked remotely into T Boyle knows that he is assisted by his housemate, a character known as "CAT", who is equally as diabolical and scheming. If the Hoya wants a real story, wants real action they would would be better off investigating CAT rather than fresh faced Appelbaum and Ramadan.

He's a liar and fraud, just like Jack. Not only should they be disqualified, but also expelled and burned at the stake.

So are some of you really saying that because there wasn't any concrete evidence on Adam, he didn't have an obligation to come forward? You (and Adam) have spent far too much time in Washington if that's your idea of ethical campaigning and integrity.

Can the Voice or the Hoya or something please do a little write-up on who all these secret societies are so the rest of us can get caught up?

It is absurd that anyone is questioning how utterly awful this makes Adam look. We can make the argument all day that secret society membership is irrelevant to GUSA, and I agree completely. But when someone asked Jack about it, he immediately offered up the truth and all relevant facts (like, you know, the name of it). When someone asked Adam, he vehemently denied membership, condemned Jack for being a member, and discounted all support of their campaign as baseless and only due to this society. Then, after allegations were flying of his support, and Vox posted about his membership, THEN he comes out with a pretty pathetic statement, pretty much saying I lied, sorry Jack, the end. He never offered up details like Jack did.

But even given that the society is irrelevant and membership is irrelevant, what is EXTREMELY and UTTERLY relevant to this election is integrity. Adam blatantly lied about his membership, in true fashion of pot calling the kettle black, he attacked Jack, all because he thought he could get away with it and use it to score a political win. It didn't work, he had to come clean. Adam Ramadan lied. That matters. That shows a lack of integrity, honesty, and leadership. Whether you're in a society or not doesn't matter. Whether you lie about it couldn't matter more.

No other candidate is a member of a secret society. Seriously, can you imagine Shavonnia or Silverstein in one?

Are you all seriously trying to suggest that this situation does not speak poorly of Adam's integrity? Because there wasn't hard proof, he wasn't obligated to tell the truth when directly asked?

Yeah, maybe some of these platforms should have planks about expanding Georgetown's Intro to Ethics classes.

While we're looking at all these groups, let's add another - DPE is a group of elitist and conceited SFS/IRC members who kneel to Terry Boyle as he makes them eat off the ground.

I don't think either of their secret society memberships are actually relevant in and of themselves, but once it became a major issue in the campaign it was wrong for Adam to deny being a member of one himself while criticizing Jack for the same thing. And if the problem with the secret societies is their lack of transparency, how is it ridiculous to have that same complaint about Adam's secret society?

Any bets on who will be the next candidate to be outed as a member of a secret society?

@Anonymous: Why is Ramadan's affiliation relevant and Appelbaum's not? Aside from that, Appelbaum was outed with hard evidence. Ramadan admitting his affiliation doesn't obligate him to out his entire organization and its members. That would be a little ridiculous, but hey, whatever justification you need to vote for Jack and Maggie.

I don't understand. Jack and his crew HAD to come clean because there was concrete evidence against them - lie and you just look foolish. Adam and whatever group he is apart of were dealing with nothing more than hearsay and he said she said accusations - no emails, screenshots, lists of members or tax returns. With that said, even if in a limited fashion, adam chose to come clean - even when there was nothing that would have truly exposed him the way jack and co. were.

Sure it may not have been in the best way that everyone on here would have liked but kudos to Nate and Adam for ultimately choosing to be the bigger people when it came to something that if they personally didn't talk about and admit to, no one would have been able to consequentially say they were guilty. sticky situation nonetheless

First of all, I don't see how Nate's comment indicts him in any way. He clearly said that network had no impact on the election - it's not hypocritical in the least.

As for Ramadan - he came out with a statement without any concrete evidence against him. I don't condone a snitch that let out Appelbaum's affiliation with the Stewards, but there was hard evidence against him nonetheless. Ramadan could have easily allowed this to drag out past the election but made a mature decision to come out with it and finish this campaign off in a fair manner. It aligns with who he's been this entire campaign.

Jack: member of an organization that he doesn't think is relevant to the campaign, is confronted about it, and admits to being part of it with a full explanation

Adam: member of an organization he knows is relevant to the campaign (especially after hypocritically criticizing Jack for the Stewards thing), denies it and lies about it, then begrudgingly admits very limited information (notably leaving out the name of the organization, their goals, other members, and any semblance of transparency) after getting caught in his lie.

I think the choice is clear, folks. I wasn't sure who to vote for before this whole debacle, but both Jack and Adam just made my decision to vote for Jack & Maggie a lot easier.

Nate and Adam literally posted a status on Facebook this morning, in response to Jack's "outing," that clearly denied participation by either one of them in any secret societies. I got the impression that they were trying to use that as another reason to vote for them.

They've since removed the post from fb, and now they are trying to act as though they have been honest about it from the get-go? What an insult to the all the people who saw it.

Note to future gaffe-makers: THE INTERNET REMEMBERS EVERYTHING.

How does Nate's comments here square with what he said previously:

"I think it's inappropriate for a candidate to rely on that work alone to win an election," Tisa said. "I think people are free to associate with whoever they want, but if they rely on a network like that, that raises questions."

He clearly doesn't think it raises questions given that he knew about his runningmate's involvement. It seems fairly clear he was intentionally attempting to deceive the student body for personal gain.
