The athletic department might want to think about scheduling more home games for this group of Hoyas.
Georgetown trounced Coppin State (0-30) 12-0 and 20-0 on Tuesday as the Hoyas improved to a formidable 9-2 at Guy Mason Field on the season and 21-33 overall.
“I think our players really enjoy playing at Guy Mason in front of the home fans,” Head Coach Pat Conlan said.
Making the run totals Georgetown piled up against Coppin State all the more impressive, both games were called after the top of the fifth inning due to the slaughter rule, giving the Hoyas just eight innings to plate 32 runs.
The wins were much needed for the Hoyas, who had seven of their last eight games — all away from home.
Sophomore middle infielders Jadig Garcia and Samantha Peters each had monster days, combining for 12 hits in the doubleheader. Peters went 6-for-9, including three home runs, with five runs and 11 RBIs over the two games. Garcia logged a 6-for-8 performance, scoring six runs and driving in three during the afternoon.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jennifer Connell and freshman left-handed pitcher Melissa Conners were also flawless, allowing just one hit apiece in their respective five innings.
In game one, sophomore third baseman Demetria Cipriano tallied three hits and Peters stole two bases to accompany her two hits, one of which included her first home run of the day. Garcia had two hits, and sophomore leftfielder Sarah Kamenski also added two.
Connell tossed a one-hit shutout in five innings, striking out an astounding 13 batters to grab her 14th win of the season.
The Hoyas jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the second, expanded the lead to five in the third and then stretched it out by seven in the fourth to build the 12-0 lead. Sloppy Coppin State fielding helped the Hoyas score seven unearned runs in the game.
In the second contest of the twin bill, the Blue and Gray posted two runs early in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. The Hoyas brought in their third run of the game in the bottom of the second via three walks and a wild pitch. Garcia then singled to drive in a run and Peters came to the plate hungry for more. Peters slammed her second home run of the day, a three-run shot, to give the Hoyas a 7-0 advantage.
In the third, Peters smashed her third home run of the day, and Georgetown had no problem in cruising to a 20-0 victory in five innings.
Peters is hitting .363 on the season and has knocked out 13 home runs, both tops on the team. She is also at the top of Georgetown’s stat sheet in triples, total bases, slugging percentage, stolen bases and assists.
“Samantha is an outstanding athlete,” Conlan said. “We’re just happy to have her for two more years.”
Conners allowed just one hit in five innings and struck out five in the victory. The Hoyas have a week off before they return to Guy Mason Field on Sat., May 3 against the Thundering Herd of Marshall for their final series of the season.
“It’s going to be very exciting here on Senior Day,” Conlan said.
