From Worlds Apart, Tastes Meld at IndeBlue

Georgetown students looking for a classy downtown meal after watching a Hoyas basketball game need look no further than IndeBleu. Located in Chinatown near Verizon Center, IndeBleu serves up an interesting blend of Indian and French cuisine.

The restaurant’s sophisticated fare offers a welcome hiatus from O’Donovan Dining Hall. The contemporary menu of fusion food consists primarily of traditional French dishes jazzed up with Indian spices.

The menu at Indebleu is quite limited, consisting mainly of meats with interesting sides and seasonings. The dishes include steak with saffron vegetables, chicken stuffed with goat cheese and lobster with tarragon. The appetizers are rather small and include monkfish stew in coconut sauce, duck foise gras with tamarind chutney and mushroom dosas.

I began my meal with three small shrimp samosas served with three different types of sauces: one sweet, one sour and one spicy. I then enjoyed a rack of lamb in a thick portabella mushroom sauce resting on a bed of lentils. The artfully crafted dishes were aesthetically pleasing and came on unusually shaped platters. After dessert (an apple crumble served in a hollowed green apple), I was satisfied, but not overly stuffed.

IndeBleu is decorated in a minimalist style that can make the room feel sterile — the white walls, tan curtains and white plates do not leave too much room for flare. The restaurant attracts a younger, trendier crowd, though they may be drawn more to the unusual cocktails and the noisy tantra lounge underneath the restaurant than to the food.

The mood was dampened by the unusually long wait in between each course: It took almost 20 minutes just to receive menus after we were seated, and the entire meal took over two hours.

Overall, the food was delicious, but the austere and sterile atmosphere, and long wait for food combined with a less-than-friendly staff, did not merit the $30 entrees and the $70 total meal, especially on a Tuesday evening.
