Songs to Warm Your Heart in Cooling Weather

As September draws to a close and the days get shorter and shorter, don’t get depressed. Since when did fall have to be so depressing? After all, today is National Love Note Day. Here are some modern tunes that are sure to inspire you as you get writing.

1. “Goodnight and Go” - Imogen Heap

Imogen Heap is one of my favorite artists. With a gorgeous voice, interesting lyrics and an intense devotion to creativity, she’ll soon have you hooked as well. This track perfectly conveys a feeling we’re all familiar with: trying to figure out how to tell that person how you feel.

2. “Popular Mechanics for Lovers” - Beulah

For anyone out there who just knows that their crush is with the wrong guy or girl, Beulah serves up the message, “Pick me instead” in this poppy, beach-inspired tune.

3. “Portions for Foxes” - Rilo Kiley

Rilo Kiley is becoming quite a buzz band. Earlier this week they played two sold — out shows at the 9:30 Club. This song is one of my favorites and is about those relationships where you know the other person is “bad news,” but you ultimately decide, “I don’t care, I like you.”

4. “I’ve Just Seen a Face” - Jim Sturgess

This cover of a Beatles’ track is featured in the recent movie Across the Universe and is a slightly poppier version of the original. You’ll be hard-pressed not to tap at least a few toes.

5. “Brand New Colony” - The Postal Service

Despite a beat that sounds remarkably like the theme from those old Mario games, this is perhaps one of the most adorable songs of all time. Guys, pay attention: You could get any girl with this song. With lines like “I’ll be your winter coat, button, zip, straight to the throat with the collar up so you won’t catch cold,” it’s got just enough sweetness to be pleasing and enough creativity to keep you awake.

6. “Change Your Mind” - The Killers

Looking for something a little less frilly? This Killer’s track from Hot Fuss cuts straight to the point: “If the answer is no, can I change your mind?” So if that special someone isn’t calling you back, you know what song to play.

7. “Out Loud” - Dispatch

This track, from indie/folk band Dispatch, has an intimate acoustic feel. It simply asks the object of the singer’s affection if she would “call [his] name out loud,” adding that he “would come running.”

8. “The Luckiest” - Ben Folds

Already in love? Give “The Luckiest” a listen. It’’s hard not to gush when listening to Ben Folds’ sensitive lyrics and gorgeous piano.

9. “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)” - Arcade Fire

My favorite song by my favorite band. An eclectic, indie spin on the classic love song, it answers the question, “What if we could just get away from it all?” Just listen to it. You’ll love it, I promise.

10. “The Fear You Won’t Fall” - Joshua Radin

This song is particularly for those of you in long-distance relationships. Sung as a soft duet, Radin’s lyrics are perfect in their simplicity and stress the hardships of being apart. “I hate the phone, but I wish you’d call.... I miss you more than I should, than I thought I could. Can’t get my mind off of you.”
