Attempted Break-In Reported at Boat House
The Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Park Police responded to a reported attempted burglary into the Washington Canoe Club, around midnight, with officers, a helicopter and a search dog.
The incident drew one MPD car and four park cars to the end of K Street, and a helicopter circled the area, shining a spotlight on the boat house. An officer with a dog also searched the wooded area nearby.
According to a member of the club who refused to give her full name, there have been at least six break-ins or attempted break-ins since December.
She said that another member of the club, who called her after the incident, was in the club with friends when someone began banging on a door and attempted entry. That member declined to comment.
“No one lives here, so we try to have people stay over [to keep watch],” she said. “It’s such an easy target.”
The member said that in the past, items have been stolen from the boat house after other break-ins. She said she suspects that the perpetrators are homeless people who live in tents in the area.
“We don’t know who it was, but we have our assumptions,” she said. “We have literally given the park police a map with the tents marked on it, but they do nothing.”
The police left the scene at 1 a.m. without making any arrests.
“Well, I guess they’re done with us,” Samantha said. “What are we supposed to do now?”
The helicopter drew several students to the Village A rooftops and the canal to get a glimpse of what it was shining its light on.
Officers on scene declined to comment.
