Two Assaults Follow Weekend Crimes

Less than 24 hours after a student was sexually assaulted at gunpoint, another sexual assault was allegedly attempted at Henle Village Sunday morning and a reported aggravated assault occurred on the Village A stairs today.

An unknown female reported to the Department of Public Safety that at 2:15 a.m. Sunday morning, she was forced into an alleyway at Henle by three college-aged Caucasian males, according to a public safety announcement. The assailants tried to sexually assault her, the alert said, but she freed herself and fled. DPS received the report through an Anonymous Crime Tips e-mail.

DPS received another report today that at 2:30 a.m., a complainant was climbing the steps to a Village A fourth-floor patio when someone grabbed her by the arms and pushed her into the handrail. When she screamed, the assailant pushed her away and fled, at which point she fell down the stairs, according to a public safety announcement. The suspect was described as a black male in his early 20s. The complainant did not report any physical injuries.

The two incidents follow an armed sexual assault at LXR early Saturday morning, in which a third-floor resident was “digitally penetrated” and forced to kiss her assailant as he pressed a gun to her leg, according to a Metropolitan Police Department incident report. After outbursts of student anxiety and fears about safety, the university promised to boost East Campus security measures, although some students remain dissatisfied after two burglaries were reported at LXR the following morning.

Way to go DPS!! The heightened state of alert seems to be working!! I think you guys deserve raises for all your hard work!! D-P-S! D-P-S! Yeah!

Criminals now know that the Georgetown University campus is "open" for their business, and no one will be there to catch them. What will it take for the administration to make serious changes to the way DPS, a police force that makes all crimes as easy as stealing candy from a baby, operates? It's no coincidence that more of these incidents are happening. The crooks of this city now know that they can literally get away with rape on our campus, inside our dormitories, and nothing will happen to them.

You've got to be able to deter these crimes in the first place. And God forbid they do occur, you have to be able to investigate them and find the perpetrator. At present, DPS lacks the competency to accomplish either one of these. And until it is able to, Georgetown will remain open for crime, and the criminals will keep coming.

This is an open invitation to any and all parents of Georgetown students to start an action against Georgetown University in general and President DeGioia in specific for their total incompetence in dealing with and complete disregard for the safety
of our children. A petition signed by parents and alumni would be a start, calling for a massive increase in "competent" well trained security personnel, a more closed campus, fixing and monitoring of all security doors and card swipe machines, increase in lighting and security cameras and any and all other means to combat the infestation of the campus with criminals.
President DeGioia should know that the Board of Trustees of the University will be made acutely aware of his response and that his job will hang in the balance. His continued silence on this matter suggests that he is not the person to lead this University.

I have been writing to university administration since the fall regarding the lack of security on campus, ever since my daughter confronted an intruder inside her Henle unit. Although I was told that measures were being taken, whatever steps were initiated have obviously not worked. I do agree that students have to take some responsibility=, i.e. properly lock doors, try not to walk alone at night, etc.; however, unless campus security and GU administration takes serious action, the problems will definitely continue. I cannot understand why campus safety is not a top priority with the administration. Real initiatives need to be taken NOW before a real tragedy occurs.

It really makes me sick that DPS and Metro PD have been wasting all this time on "party patrols." They've gone so far as to arrest students for alcohol in the name of keeping law and order, while allowing rapes and robberies to simultaneously go unpunished both on and off campus. Unbelievable. I think some of the powers that be around here really need to get their priorities in order.

I am a concerned parent and I want to send my comments and concerns to the University and the Office of the President about the appalling lack of security on and off campus. I can't find the email addresses I need to send comments to. Does anyone have them, or do I need to use snail mail?

I have sent DeGioia a letter by snail mail. I don't have any e-mail address. However, the letters or e-mails should really go to the Board of Trustees. I am trying to get a list with addresses which I can post.

A link on the Philosophy department's website lists his email as president@georgetown.edu.

Why do you think DPS is to blame? Instead of talking bad about them what can you do to HELP them. I'm sure DPS has helped you in some way!!!
