Observatory Is for Plants, Not Just Stars
After reading “A Relic Worth Bringing Back” (THE HOYA, April 22, 2008, A2), I felt I should write to you.
The Laboratory of Entomology and Biodiversity resides in the Astronomical Observatory where it continues scientific discovery through its biodiversity and conservation studies, important in helping Georgetown University go green. The department of biology teaches four courses in the lab teaching space. I use the plant collection that you see in the observatory windows for teaching. The observatory continues to promote scientific work and scientific literacy in the tradition of renowned past scientists who worked there. Both undergraduate and graduate students work in the lab, and their experiences there help them to reach career dreams.

I would just like to comment that GUAS respects the use of the Observatory building by the Biology Department in general and Dr. Barrows in particular. GUAS has gone to some effort to see that these uses are not ignored or marginalized. Both the Dean of the College and the Dean of the Graduate School have stated their intent to do everything possible to avoid unduly inconveniencing the Biology Department in general and Dr. Barrows in particular. As the faculty advisor to GUAS, I would note that Dr. Barrows is more than welcome at any and all meetings of GUAS including planning meetings of the group working on the restoration of the Observatory. I believe that Dr. Barrows is aware of this standing invitation, but I would like to reiterate it here so that the position of GUAS is clear. I would emphasize that this is a genuine grass-roots student effort. My role has been minimal and purely advisory. I am impressed by the care and thought that the students have put into their effort. I think that the effort is a win-win proposition that has the potential to benefit the entire GU community. GUAS and I welcome all constructive comments.
