Paul Advocates for Greater Respect for Personal Freedoms
Congressman Ron Paul (R-Texas) may not be the GOP presidential front-runner, but students came out in full force to hear him articulate his libertarian message in Gaston Hall on Wednesday.
Entering to a standing ovation and chants of “Paul” in a packed auditorium, the native Pennsylvanian delivered an address that focused on his belief in limited government and a renewed focus on the Constitution.
Invoking the founding fathers, Paul declared that every person has the right to full liberty, and that these liberties are currently dwindling in American society.
“[My message is] appealing to everybody, because it offers one thing — it offers freedom,” he said.
Central among the issues that Paul discussed was the war in Iraq. He said that the war has been a mistake all along, noting that he is the only Republican presidential candidate who voted against the authorization of the Iraq War.
“We’ve gotten ourselves into this mess,” he said. “How about supporting the troops by keeping them out of these no-win wars?”
Paul added that continued Iraqi occupation cannot be adequately justified by those who argue the United States has a responsibility to fix the problem.
“If we made the mistake, why not just come home, save the money and save the lives,” he said.
He then drew upon the larger global context in order to emphasize what he believes are the current flaws in U.S. foreign policy.
“We’re supposed to spread democracy, but we’ve been doing that since [President] Woodrow Wilson,” he said. “We don’t have the authority to police the world. Maybe it’s been good-intended, but good intentions won’t get us anywhere.”
Most importantly, he argued, the United States must lead by example.
“The best way to spread our message is by our example, not by the barrel of a gun,” he said.
Paul did not pull punches with regard to the George W. Bush administration, suggesting that there might be ulterior motives for our foreign operations.
“We’ll pretend we’re doing it out of the goodness of our heart, but we usually only do it in countries that have oil,” he said.
Throughout his speech, Paul emphasized that governments should be small so as not to infringe upon individual liberties and freedom.
“People don’t have rights to jobs, and people don’t have the right to medical care. What you have is a right to your life. It is never, never necessary to sacrifice your liberties to be safe,” he said.
International trade was another prominent issue in the speech, as Paul said the U.S. should foster trade and not discriminate on the basis of value judgments.
“We’d have to trade with people that are less than perfect because we’re less than perfect,” he said.
Paul has only secured 14 delegates to the Republican National Convention, according to the Associated Press, but he has a strong Internet support base as well as a strong group of backers in active military service. Paul said that has been Googled and viewed more times on Youtube than any other presidential candidate, and also received more donations from active military personnel than any other candidate in the Republican race.
Paul was also light-hearted throughout the course of speech, even calling for electoral reform on the basis of his Internet success.
“There’s only one law that I’m proposing. From now on, we’re going to have our elections on the Internet,” he said.
During the question-and-answer session, a student asked Paul why it took him many years to deny that he wrote an article in his independent newsletter prejudicial towards blacks, Jews and gays in 1992.
Paul admitted that he did not deny the allegations at first, but has since denied writing it, referring to the incident as a publishing oversight. He also said that he believes his record speaks for itself.
“I handled it in 1996 differently, because I did feel a lot of moral responsibility for neglect. The sad part of it all is I’m probably the biggest champion of all for everybody,” he said.

Americans should be accommodated with Online Elections, In New Jersey i can register my car and get a receipt..... I could vote at the hopper at the polls, but those are not counted correctly. Polling stations do not provide proofs. Plus i got 3 unregistered tickets, officers testimony was presumed innocent. dude mails me a ticket and says he say me days later had no idea my car was registered and i had to pay the fine. Judge said I was a man of principals trying the case.Ron Paul is the only candidate who uses the 100% max scale and does not engage in doublespeak to confuse people. Ron Paul helped me realize core issues and not the little green footballs.
The media tries to pretend that Ron Paul does not exist. The media should not choose our next president. Ron Paul has a lot more support then everyone wants to admit. I live in AZ and was not able to vote for him in our Primary because of our state rules (that’s right I can’t vote for who I want). There have also been stories of his name being "accidentally left off the ballot" and people making up statements that he has dropped out of the campaign. THE GOVERNMENT IS AFRAID OF A CANDIDATE LIKE RON PAUL. HE SUPPORTS THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY AND OUR RIGHTS. How could anyone really vote for someone who thinks that we should be in Iraq for the next 100 years? Then on to Iran? How many more people have to die for special interests? If we actually needed our troops in the U.S. we wouldn’t even have any available to protect us. They are all in other countries where they should not be. Bring our troops home and protect our borders. Why even waste anymore time? We do not have the right to be the police of the world nor should we. We our destroying our own economy by fighting wars that we can't win.
Our Government prints money out of thin air and borrows more from other countries then we can ever pay back which is killing us and the value of our dollar is rapidly dropping. Do you really think that the government brainwashed zombies and liars have done a good job with our country so far? Bush has been one of the worst presidents in history. You all fell for his BS. He used the emotions of our country after 9/11 to put us in a war that benefits him, his friends, and his family members. Why allow them to throw us further down? Fighting wars that can never be won and wasting our hard earned money on their special interests. The companies that get bids to do jobs in countries where we are at war, they get over paid, and the money trail always comes back to people in the Government that are in some way affiliated with that company.
ACCORDING TO THE CONSTITUTION THE GOVERNMENT HAS NO RIGHT TO TAX US. THEY TAKE OUR MONEY AND USE IT FOR THEIR INTERESTS. THEY SPEND OUR TAX MONEY ON WHATEVER THEY WANT. Then they want to send us a small check to keep us quiet. Its time for us all to stand up for ourselves and fight this!!!
IT IS TIME FOR EVERY CITIZEN IN THIS COUNTRY TO COME TOGETHER AND STOP ALLOWING OUR GOVERNMENT TO TREAT US LIKE SLAVES. RON PAUL IS THE ONLY CANDIDATE THAT CARES ABOUT YOU.

PLEASE READ AND LISTEN TO HIS MESSAGES. HE IS THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN SAVE US!!! GIVE REAL HOPE A CHANCE…
"ACCORDING TO THE CONSTITUTION THE GOVERNMENT HAS NO RIGHT TO TAX US."
Have you ever read the Constitution, sir?
Article I, Section II of the United States Constitution:
"Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons. The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct."
clarified by Amendment XVI to the United States Constitution:
"The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration."
It's pretty clear that the Constitution fully allows the government to tax us.

Ron Paul's speech was awesome, he is the one Republican the GOP should be backing, and not Mr. McLiberal/McCain.

Ron Paul has been misquoted, and underestimated by design.
Our entire family of republicans have strong beliefs about his important message. It is interesting that he is now receiving media attention............when it benifits circulation but cannot change the outcome of the nomination. He is truly authentic and has the record to prove it. I wish him God's speed.

Why do you source the Associated Press to give a delegate count? Why not consult Paul's campaign? They're his delegates. Even the corrupt GOP would have to admit more, and they hate Paul with a greedy passion.

It is a good feeling to know that so many of our young adults are able to understand what Dr. Ron Paul speaks about. The message is complicated from a conceptual point of view but far superior to the message of any other candidate. Young people that can imagine the country operating under the same "idea", thus constitution, as the founders of our great society did is impressive. Perhaps the school teachers stayed true to the turbulent yet fantastic history of America. An America we wish to keep free and led by it's PEOPLE to continue it's great trek through history. Lately I have thought a union between Obama supporters that desire a "CHANGE" that is really just a word that takes the place of "Liberty". Liberty to make our society better because the existing government is not doing it. Both democrats and republicans. It is clear to both Obama supporters and Paul supporters that the existing political machine is not serving the people. Let all of us join together to bring about the change we all really want. A fresh start!

There are distinguishing factors about Obamas "change" & Ron Pauls message. RP repeatedly warns of the power the Federal Reserve has been granted. Considering the Federal Reserve is no more Federal than Federal Express, it is frightening. The Fed is a private Bank that can value-devalue the dollar at will....and does. The IRS is the right arm of the Fed. Members of the Fed, IRS & global community are tightly intertwined. Those same members are senior level members of the CFR. The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) disdains US constitutional Law & vehemnetly pushes for Global government, NWO. This is easily researched. Readers can research further & find that Michelle Obama is a member of the CFR Chicago. Every candidate running for president is a member of the CFR in some capacity....EXCEPT ONE, Ron Paul. RP wants to take our country back from these elitist NWO Global control freaks. The veins of corruption run deep, CFR, SPP, NAU, voter fraud, media blockage/misinformation, etc.. etc.. If these elitist's have placed Michelle Obama in this type of position, its apparent her husband is "on board". We are all aware of the lies regurgitated on campaign trail..its an old story. Barack is an excellent speaker, very charismatic - beware of the bigger picture. Americans better start paying more attention to politics & less attention to sports & reality TV shows - or else. America is being hi-jacked, not by force but by stealth. Ron Paul warns about this, against this & is the only candidate to address this. Give us Liberty or give us death. The latter may be closer than you think.

Thanks for the good article!
The fact that Amendment XVI was never ratified by the states does, in fact, mean that it is unconstitutional. Did you know that?

I do not support Ron Paul either because, among other things, I think having a Department of Education is a good thing, and taxing the people to fund this department does not give me pause; however, I think quoting the part of the Constitution that declares we should count African-Americans as three-fifths of a person does not help, and even hurts, your argument.
Most people don't know the truth about what the US government has done to the people and the rest of the world. The Department of Education does nothing to help educate our children. But emotionally it makes you feel good to think there is such a Dept helping children. That's the problem so much evil is done in the name of good. Ron Paul is educating us on the issues and that is why he is not given much press and deliberately mocked.
In the end, he will win because enough of us have heard his message and we aren't going anywhere anytime soon. GU student should understand his message, particularly with the Jesuit value of men and women in service to others. That is what Ron is doing for us right now. Serving the younger generation.
FreedomFest 2008 - Ron Paul spoke at the conference last year and he has been invited again this year to join our 100 plus speakers and 1,000 plus attendees in Las Vegas on July 10 -12 at Freedomfest 2008. We must do what we can to get the message of liberty, a return to limited constitutional government and free markets out to the American public. See www.freedomfest.com
