Graduate Student Dies After Collapsing at Yates

A game of racquetball ended in tragedy Wednesday evening after a doctor collapsed at Yates Field House and was pronounced dead shortly afterwards at Georgetown University Hospital, according to the Department of Public Safety.

The man, a doctor, was playing racquetball with a fellow doctor when he "just collapsed" at approximately 6:30 p.m., said DPS Director Darryl Harrison.

"Efforts were made to revive him by the Yates staff and the fellow doctor," Harrison said, adding that both cardiopulmonary resuscitation and an automatic external defibrillator were utilized in attempts to revive the man.

According to Alicia Nelson, GERMS information officer, GERMS was dispatched and arrived on the scene within 10 minutes. She could not reveal other details about the response.

The victim was then transported to the emergency room, where he could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead, Harrison said. He said that he did not know the cause of death.
