D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty will announce today that the Wisconsin Avenue extension of the Circulator bus line will stay in spite of previous plans to shut down the route, The Washington Post reported Monday.

Fenty will announce the extension’s continuation at the Circulator stop at Whitehaven Place this morning, according to an entry on “Get There,” the Post’s transportation blog. The District Department of Transportation announced in a Sept. 21 press release that the Wisconsin Avenue-Whitehaven Street line would be discontinued on Oct. 4 because of spending cuts.

The closure of the route was set to cut all Circulator stops on Wisconsin Avenue north of M Street, including stops at N Street, O Street and Q Street, with the closest stop to campus located at the intersection of M Street and Wisconsin Avenue.

The DDOT said the Whitehaven extension serves 2 percent of all riders on the Georgetown-Union Station Circulator route and contributes 15 percent of the route’s operating costs.

Following the announcement of the extension’s cancellation, the Citizens Association of Georgetown launched a campaign to fight the cuts that included the distribution of form letters addressed to Fenty.

The D.C. Circulator, known for its bright red buses and $1 fares, was introduced in 2005 as an alternative to the Metrobus.
