Vote Absentee Here in D.C.
While many Georgetown students are scrambling to obtain their absentee ballots, the District of Columbia is offering them another option this November — casting their out-of-state ballots in person.
Dan Murphy, spokesman for the D.C. Board of Elections, said that the purpose of the in-person absentee voting is to provide voters with an additional option to cast their ballot. “It’s just a matter of convenience,” he said.
More than 31 states offer some form of early voting, which permits voters to vote at an election official’s office or another satellite voting location. The majority of states allow early votes to be cast 10 to 14 days prior to the election, although this varies from state to state, according to the National Conference of State Leaders’ Web site.
“In-person absentee voting is distinct because you need a reason,” Murphy said.
Absentee voting is designated for registered voters who cannot make it to the polls on Election Day because of illness, physical disability or travel. Voters typically receive ballots in the mail and after voting, return them to their home state, postmarked by Nov. 4 — Election Day.
Nationwide, 15 percent of the electorate cast early ballots in the 2000 presidential election, while 20 percent cast early ballots in the 2004 presidential election, according to a Time magazine survey. The survey also predicts that as many as one-third of all voters are expected to utilize an early voting option in the upcoming election.
Although Georgetown students do qualify as residents of D.C., and therefore can register to vote in the District, absentee voting has tended to be the more popular option.
“Students usually don’t register to vote in D.C. either because of having already registered in their home state or because the presidential choice is usually pretty certain in D.C.,” Alex Armstrong (COL ’09), spokesman for the Georgetown College Democrats, said. D.C. is a historically left-leaning city.
Ellen Dargie (COL ’10), president of the Georgetown College Republicans, was unavailable for comment.
To aid students in this process, the College Democrats carried out a dorm storm, knocking on every door on campus and handing out about 900 absentee ballot applications. GUVotes, the bipartisan voting initiative led by the College Republicans and Democrats, also directed hundreds of students to online registration resources.
In-person absentee voting is offered at the District of Columbia Board of Elections headquarters located at 441 4th St. NW, Suite 250, near the Judiciary Square Metro stop. In-person absentee voting is held from Monday, Oct. 20 until Monday, Nov. 3 and can be completed Monday through Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. until 4:45 p.m.
