Student Assaulted by Five Men

By Sarah Mimms | Mar 31 2009 |

A student was assaulted by five males near the intersection of 36th and P Streets NW at approximately 12:40 a.m. Friday, according to a Public Safety Alert issued by the Department of Public Safety the same day.

The PSA stated that five males approached the student, asked him for money and, when he refused, began to beat him over the head. When the student started yelling, the suspects fled, according to the report. Two suspects were described as a black male and a Hispanic male, both wearing black hooded sweatshirts. The other three suspects were not described in the report.

The PSA classified the incident as an “aggravated assault.”

DPS reported that the Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene, but the student refused to file a report with them. The student also declined medical treatment.

DPS is so incompetent that all they are potentially good for is to stand around and hopefully project some kind of "presence." As a result, instead of just standing by the front gates, why don't they stand around (or go on CONTINUOUS walking patrols of) the neighborhood?

Too many students have been robbed and/or assaulted within just one block of the front gates for too many years!!!

add "The Five Guys" to the list of notorious Georgetown criminals (joining the Georgetown Cuddler and Dajuan Summers)

If you make $11/hour, are you going to take on a group of five attackers armed with your new riot batton and pepper spray OR sleep in the patrol car parked at the front gate and literally dream about a better job???

DC Police are too lazy, undermotivated, and poorly managed to have any impact on high crime areas, do you really expect anything out of DPS?

The Washington Post recently reported that to limit overtime, DC Police were told in an internal memo that they should avoid making arrests near the end of there shifts!!!

Could be much worse, just be gald that we didn't/don't go to University of Maryland, the new national crime stats came out yesterday and Maryland is #2 for murders accross the nation with PG county making the the top 10 list.

These are five pretty dumb guys if they expected the victim not to yell...Poor showing.

Why does DPS always get blamed for being lazy, and not in the area? Was there a Metropolitan cop in the area? Was there a Capitol Police Officer in the area, or an Officer from the United States Secret Service or Park Police in the area? Doesn't each of those departments have jurisdiction in that area? So why not bash the other local departments for not having a constant patrol of that block?
Why? Becasue it's easier to blame someone else when bad things happen to you. Also, Because it's impossible for any of those departments to have someone out walking in circles, in order to the one "Aggravated Assault" that might happen in a two or three week period. If it was such a giant deal, why the hell didn't the suspect file a freaking report? Maybe he wants the resident Georgetown "Vigilante" to swing down from on top of the Healy clock tower and save him?
Get a life. Stop blaming DPS or any other department for everything that happens. DC is violent, the general public (especially college students) is stupid, and crime will go on. There's isn't enough time or officers in any depertment for them to be everywhere at once. Welcome to the real, big, bad world.
