Scheduled Repairs to Cause November Metro Delays

Metro riders can expect to see delays throughout the month of November due to regular maintenance repairs on all lines except for the Green line.

According to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s press release, the most intensive maintenance will be done on weekend nights when Metro use is lowest, with more minor repairs done on other nights of the week.

“The Green line is one of the newer lines that came on in the ’90s. When the time comes that it is identified that work needs to be done on it, we will be there. We have done similar repairs to the green line in the past. These repairs are routine, and there will always be some part of the system that needs to be fixed,” Steven Taubenkibel, public affairs spokesperson for WMATA, said.

Taubenkibel also said that the construction will not impact Thanksgiving weekend travel, as there will be no repairs done to the system that weekend. The repairmen will have the holiday weekend off, and the trains should be running normally.

As for December, Taubenkibel reported that plans for maintenance are not yet finalized, but there will be continued repairs during December and January.

According to Taubenkibel, the maintenance work will minimally impact travel during the holiday season, and repairs will resume in January.

“There will be less work being done during the weekends closer to the holidays because of all the work the workers have done during the rest of the year, so they deserve some time off to be with their families,” added Taubenkibel.

During the current maintenance period, WMATA is urging riders to follow their news releases about the times and locations of the delays and to plan for an extra 20 to 30 minutes of travel time when using the Metro.
