Online Satire Magazine Draws Criticism

About 65 members of the Georgetown community gathered on Tuesday night at a community forum held in response to controversial articles in the most recent edition of The Georgetown Heckler, an online satirical magazine.

Heckler Editor in Chief Jack Stuef (COL ’10) addressed concerns about the offensive nature of articles published in the most recent issue of the publication, and explained that the satirical articles are meant to draw attention to latent racism on campus.

Students and faculty raised questions about the intention of three articles in particular that dealt with self-segregation, sex crimes and racism.

Although the Heckler is not formally affiliated with the university, Vice President for Student Affairs Todd Olson expressed his concern in an e-mail about the controversy.

“As a Catholic and Jesuit institution we are called to a higher standard,” Olson said in the e-mail read aloud by Frances Davila (SFS ’10), a facilitator at the forum. “We place great importance on open dialogue and the free exchange of ideas, but offensive and inaccurate language does nothing to further this mission.”

At the end of the forum, which lasted about two hours, the focus of the conversation shifted to broader institutional questions. Students and faculty at the forum discussed steps that could be taken to create an inclusive campus community.
