Madison Square Garden Owners Look to D.C.

Madison Square Garden Entertainment, which owns Madison Square Garden Arena in New York City, is looking to build a new venue in Washington.

The group contacted Steven Moore, executive director of the Washington, D.C., Economic Partnership, about possibilities of a new development.

According to Moore, Madison Square Garden Entertainment is looking to open a venue holding 6,000 seats and 100,000 square feet of space near shopping areas and public transportation. In 2006, the company purchased the 2,800-seat Beacon Theater in New York City, and a year later it bought the Chicago Theater, with 3,600 seats, according to the Washington Business Journal.

Madison Square Garden Entertainment is most interested in either downtown D.C. or the Capitol Riverfront, which is in close proximity to the Nationals Park and the Navy Yard, to build, the Washington Business Journal reported.

Janice Hill, director of U Street Theatre Foundation Inc., which manages the Lincoln Theater, a 1,200-seat venue on U Street, told the Washington Business Journal that she fears competition from the proposed venue, whose renovations were put on hold because of the state of the U.S. economy.
