To the Editor:

I was so grateful to read James Hilson’s viewpoint (“Don’t Be a Duke: Vulgarity Sucks,” THE HOYA, Jan. 27, 2006, A3) concerning fan behavior at basketball games. As we have heard JT III say time and again, enthusiastic fans are important to our athletic teams’ success.

While I appreciate the energy of fans who are so inspired by our team’s performance as to forget propriety, offensive behavior diminishes any victory our players achieve on the court. Hoya Blue should be commended for its hard work and leadership role in promoting school spirit on campus. Perhaps its members can play an active part on this front as well, by making it clear to fans that offensive behavior is not what we represent when we say, “We are Georgetown.”
