GU Runs Past Competition

The Hoya men won their third consecutive NCAA Regional Championship this weekend qualifying for next weekend’s national championship and solidifying their presence as a preeminent national team. The women also finished strong in second place.

The Georgetown men collected 66 points to finish 13 points ahead of American and 25 points ahead of Villanova.

Senior Matt Debole was the top Georgetown finisher at third-place finish overall with a time of 30:18.8 for the 10,000 meter course.

“I was very happy with Matt [Debole]’s performance,” Head Men’s Cross Country Coach Pat Henner said. “He did a great job at executing the race plan we talked about.”

Sophomore Levi Miller continued his impressive season, and was the second Hoya to cross the line in 11th place with a time of 30:44.5.

The final three Georgetown scorers, juniors Justin Scheid and ichael Banks and senior Andre Laboy, crossed the line in 17th, 18th and 19th place, respectively, with times of 31:04.2, 31:07.8 and 31:09.

“We ran a conservative race plan and still won the race,” Henner said. “If we had gone out faster with the lead pack, then our 3-4-5 guys could have finished higher towards the top 10.”

The women earned runner-up honors in the regional championship, finishing with 77 total points, 11 points behind first-place Princeton. La Salle, West Virginia and Villanova rounded out the top five spots with scores of 87, 140 and 180, respectively.

“The race plan was to go out really conservative and run as relaxed as we can while still qualifying,” Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Ron Helmer said. “Winning wasn’t the top goal – qualifying was.”

The duo of senior Elizabeth Maloy and junior Melissa Grelli continued to lead the Georgetown team by finishing in second and third place overall with times of 20:31.8 and 20:37.1, respectively, to cover the 6,000 meter course.

“We went out slow for the first mile and listened to the race plan, and then Melissa [Grelli] and I went for it,” aloy said. “We’re running well as a team and we’re going into this weekend’s national meet with lots of confidence.”

Junior Maggie Infeld sped to a 15th-place finish with a time of 21:10.9.

“Maggie [Infeld] had a great race, probably the best of the season so far,” Helmer said.

Senior Hillary Bontz and Joanna Rodgers rounded out the top-five Hoya scorers with times of 21:26.4 and 21:36.8 to finish 26th and 31st, respectively.

“We’re going into this weekend’s NCAA championships fresh just like we hoped,” Helmer said. “We’re at a level that we need to be and I’m expecting big things this weekend.”

The NCAA Championships will take place in Terre Haute, Ind. this weekend.
