Tuesday, October 5, 2004 GOP Welcomes Minorities Too

To the Editor:

The article “Democratic Party Embodies Equality” by Yashreeka Huq (The Hoya, Oct. 1, 2004, A3) characterizes the Republican Party as the antithesis to equality and freedom, which is simply not true.

Nobody was “legislating against [her] faith” after Sept. 11, 2001, and I’m afraid Huq is yet another liberal taken by political hype around the Patriot Act and does not understand it at all.

There are no prejudicial “misconceptions allowed by social conservatives in this administration,” as she should recall Bush’s clear and well-advertised distinction between Islam and the terrorists that falsely claim martyrdom in its name.

The bleak “big picture” of widespread American bigotry simply isn’t there.

Lastly, if she only feels comfortable talking to Democrats, I think she needs to meet some nicer Republicans, so come to the debates and don’t be shy when you see us tabling in Red Square. (We’d much rather communicate with those who disagree with us than, say, have our fliers torn down.)
