Georgetown Struggles at Nationals

The Georgetown University women’s volleyball team coasted to two Big East wins this past weekend over Boston College and Providence College. The Hoyas dominated each team, finishing both matches with shutout victories.

Georgetown first played host to Boston College on Friday, Nov. 8. The Hoyas held the Eagles to a -0.071 hitting percentage and won three straight games 3-0 (30-19, 30-18, 30-24).

“We’re at the point and time where we can’t get in the top four of Big East, but we still need to have a strong finish,” Head Coach Li Liu said. “We had a good start to the season . we need to have a strong finish too.”

Senior outside hitter and captain Lauren Warner guided her team to victory, tallying seven digs, a match-high 17 kills and a team-high seven blocks. Senior middle blocker Anna Kleinsorge posted six kills, two blocks and a match-high hitting percentage of 0.500.

Sophomore middle blocker Sara Albert tied Warner with a match-high seven blocks, also contributing two digs and four kills. Junior setter Jen Ward dished out a match-high 22 assists in just two games, while freshman outside hitter Ashley Lancaster registered four kills, finishing with a 0.444 hitting percentage.

Georgetown closed its home season on Sunday, Nov. 10 in cDonough Gymnasium against Providence College. On Senior Day, the Hoyas were fittingly led to victory on the strength of strong performances from their two seniors, Kleinsorge and Warner. Kleinsorge contributed a match-high 15 kills, three blocks, three digs and a 0.682 hitting percentage. Warner finished her last home game with three blocks, eight digs and tying a match-high four service aces.

The Friars, who have yet to win a Big East match, showed little evidence of a rally at any point in the three games. Georgetown hit a combined 0.343 and defeated Providence 3-0 (30-18, 30-15, 30-25).

Along with Kleinsorge, Albert went errorless in all three games, hitting an incredible match-high 0.737. Albert recorded 14 kills and a match-high four blocks.

Sophomore setter Margaret Vernon added a match-high 30 assists as well as five digs. Freshman outside hitter Natasha Nguyen had four service aces, increasing Georgetown’s single season record to 85 aces.

“This weekend we took care of the basics. Even though we had some bad losses, we can’t just give up . we want to end the season on a winning note and turn it around next year,” Liu said.

After the weekend, Georgetown improves to 6-5 in conference play and 16-12 overall. The Hoyas close out the season with two away Big East games, first challenging Rutgers on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. then facing the Pirates of Seton Hall Nov. 17.
