Both the men’s lightweight and heavyweight crew teams had strong performances in events last weekend, with the heavyweights traveling to Redwood Shores, Calif., to compete in the Stanford Invitational, and the lightweights facing Navy on the Severn River in Maryland for the John J. Forster Cup.

The heavyweight team raced Hobart and Oregon State on Saturday and faced Stanford on Sunday.

Georgetown’s heavyweights began Saturday with a second-place finish against Hobart in the second varsity eight before defeating Hobart in the varsity eight by 2.3 seconds. In the afternoon, Georgetown lost both the second varsity eight and varsity eight events to Oregon State by 0.2 and 1.3 seconds, respectively.

Against Stanford on Sunday, the Hoyas fell to the Cardinals in the varsity eight but defeated the Cardinals in the second varsity eight by 3.6 seconds.

The men’s lightweight team did not have to travel far as they raced Navy on the Severn River this Saturday. The lightweight team was racing for the Forster Cup, named after John J. Forster (GSB ’70) , a 1982 inductee to the Georgetown University Athletics Hall of Fame. Forster also represented the United States at the 1972 Munich Olympics and received two Purple Hearts for his service in Vietnam.

The Hoyas failed to win the cup, falling to Navy’s varsity eight by nine seconds, the second varsity eight by 11 seconds, the third varsity eight by 12 seconds and the fourth varsity eight by nearly 30 seconds. The 2000-meter race had generally good conditions, with some headwind.

Next, the lightweight team will travel to Princeton, N.J., on April 21 to take on Penn and Princeton.
