MEN’S TENNIS Colonials Top Hoyas Area Rivals Dominate Georgetown Netmen By Jason Del Rey Special to The Hoya

Coming off an impressive victory at last weekend’s Towson Invitational, the Georgetown University men’s tennis team dropped a hard-fought contest with local nemesis George Washington University Wednesday, as the Colonials downed the Hoyas, 5-2.

The Hoyas had many chances to earn the first team point, awarded in doubles play, but could not capitalize on their opportunities. The No. 1 doubles’ team of junior Marc Lohser and sophomore Dennis Cravedi were serving with a 6-5 lead but dropped the next three games and fell to the GW pair. At No. 2 doubles, the freshman tandem of Aaron Shumaker and Erik Bildman also served with a lead late in the match at 5-4, yet were broken twice and fell 8-5. With the team lead already in favor of George Washington, senior captains Nick Sklavounos and Ken Jordan jumped out to an impressive 7-3 advantage before closing out their match with an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 spot.

In singles competition, Georgetown once again found itself with ample opportunity for a comeback, but could not overcome the Colonials. The Hoyas registered first set victories at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 singles only to lose the last two sets in each of those matches. At No. 2 singles, Cravedi provided a highlight with an inspiring 7-6(8), 6-4 triumph. In addition, Bildman, who had a phenomenal weekend at Towson, continued his singles success with a 6-3, 6-2 trouncing of GW’s Mike Melen at the No. 5 spot.

The mens’ tennis team next competes at the Army Invitational from Oct. 19-21 at West Point, N.Y. This individual competition will feature teams from Cornell, Lehigh, Marist, Rutgers, St. Bonaventure and St. John’s.
