Hoya International: The Enchantment Phase
03/25/11 00:58 AM
Our foreign correspondents bring you the latest in overseas culture, trends and adventures. Brought to you from Madrid: In a cultural adaptation program hosted by Georgetown University in Madrid, our group had been told that after a certain amount of time during your experience abroad the student finds a state of “enchantment” with their surroundings. It is a point when even the most banal things give a sense of wonderment simply because they “are” as a part of your assumed perceived exoticness of the local. Think of a line of trees situated in a park. You would perceive this line of trees to be beautiful and unique simply because they happened to have been planted, say, in Spain, even though they are just a few scrawny saps located a few blocks from your typical...Haute on the Hilltop: Happy Spring!
03/21/11 21:25 PM
The Hilltop is known for its crop of fashion-forward ladies and gents. Our trendspotter locates these individuals and gets you inspired, now. Name: Cait Gallagher Year: Class of '14 School: College Major: Undeclared Hometown: Mahwah, N.J . Cait looks stylin' and ready for spring on her way to class in a purple ruffled top and always-flattering skinny jeans. In a move that sunny California girl Lauren Conrad would definitely approve, she pulls together her entire ensemble with the eternally stylish wardrobe essential — a schoolboy blazer, achieving a balance between sweet and structured. Cait hits the mark with all the perfect accessories, matching a gold belt with gold bracelets, and adorable pink floral flats with a pink and gold long necklace. Want Cait's cute and...Wisconsin Avenue Blaze Shuts Down Auto Shop, Restaurant
03/15/11 19:37 PM
Flammable fumes that came into contact with a space heater were the likely culprit of a fire at the Washingtonian Auto Shop on Wisconsin Avenue this morning. The blaze lasted 15 minutes, injuring one and leaving significant damage to the gas station and car repair shop. Wisconsin Avenue, which had been closed between P Street and Reservoir Road, reopened this afternoon. No word yet on the reopening of either the auto shop or its neighbor, popular watering hole Los Cuates.

Hoya International: Odd Ads in Australia
03/15/11 19:01 PM
Our foreign correspondents bring you the latest in overseas culture, trends and adventures. The dish in Sydney, Australia: So, as everyone on the Hilltop is slowly getting back into the swing of things after a restful spring break, I am only in my third week of classes here at University of Sydney. In the spirit of reawakening my mind, which has been on a two-month hiatus, I thought I'd provide a little analysis of an aspect of Australian culture that I find — well, intriguing. As you can see from the pictures below, I think it's safe to say that Australians take a much more relaxed attitude toward their advertisements and what is portrayed to the general public. I can attest that the Aussies speak much more freely in terms of swearing, but I wasn't expecting to see this...Haute on the Hilltop: Spring 2011
03/01/11 02:29 AM
The Hilltop is known for its crop of fashion-forward ladies and gents. Our trendspotter locates these individuals and gets you inspired, now. Name: Mary Grace Reich Year: Class of '13 School: School of Foreign Service Major: Culture and Politics Hometown: Mount Joy, Pa. Mary Grace's sheer top with lace details is a perfect transitional piece for these temperamental February days, teasing us with the prospect of spring. Keeping up with celebrity trends, Mary Grace chose a top that is light, bright and flowy, giving her a fresh look. But with long sleeves and a tank layered underneath she won't be shivering if she has a seat near the window (which we've enjoyed having open. Yay!). You can find a similar one here. Paired with jeans and classic brown boots she looks cute and...
